Here stands a love doll that transcends humanity.
"Love Doll: The Trajectory", supervised by Orient Industry, published by MICRO MAGAZINE in 2017.
Published as a commemorative book for Orient Industry's 40th anniversary.
In 1977, Orient Industry was established in Ueno, Tokyo, as a specialized body manufacturer.
Since our founding, our goal has always been to develop representations of women that offer a sense of emotional peace — companions who can gently soothe the heart by simply being close by.
What we have created are not mere “Dutch wives” designed solely for sexual purposes. Rather, we have pursued the development of love dolls — companions that can engage with people and foster a sense of connection.
From the Birth of a Love Doll

Each love doll is carefully handcrafted, one by one, after receiving an order from a customer. When a doll is completed, the entire staff sends her off with the heartfelt sentiment of giving away a beloved daughter in marriage.
With this feeling in mind, Orient Industry includes a commemorative ring with every love doll purchased. It symbolizes a wedding ring for the daughter being sent off — a gesture filled with the hope that she will be cherished and loved for a long time by her new owner.
At some point, love doll users began to refer to the doll’s arrival as "omukae" — a welcoming, or bringing someone home.

1977

HOHOEMI
The Origin and the Beginning – Orient Industry’s First Ever Doll
Released in 1977, Hohoemi marked the very first product by Orient Industry—a milestone that sparked the beginning of the love doll’s evolution.Developed in response to early user feedback-complaints such as "Dutch wives lack durability" or "they don't look appealing"-Hohoemi was crafted with innovation at its core.
To improve both longevity and appearance, soft vinyl was used for the face and chest, while the waist was reinforced with soft polyurethane, offering more realistic elasticity and strength—cutting-edge features for the time. However, the arms, legs, and other parts were still inflatable vinyl, which made air leakage an unresolved issue. This limitation drove the development of the next generation of dolls, with goals to eliminate air inflation entirely, improve durability, and deliver a more lifelike appearance.

1982

OMOKAGE
A Seamless Latex Doll, Inspired by the Memory of a Late Wife
Following the release of Hohoemi, Orient Industry began receiving heartfelt letters from users-many of whom shared how the dolls had helped them cope with personal loss or emotional burdens. This became the foundation of Orient Industry’s philosophy: to create dolls that provide emotional comfort and companionship. Around this time, the company also launched the “Ueno Counseling Room” (now the Ueno Showroom), offering not only product guidance but also a space for deeper conversations with prospective buyers.
Five years after Hohoemi, the company introduced its second model, Omokage, named after a user's letter mourning his beloved wife. This model featured a latex exterior with a foam urethane interior, eliminating the need for air inflation—a revolutionary step in the world of love dolls, which until then had largely been synonymous with inflatable models.
The upgrade from soft vinyl to latex brought significant benefits: users could place their full weight on the doll without fear of bursting or air leakage. The latex skin offered a more human-like touch, while detachable arms and legs made storage easier.
Attention to detail was evident throughout: 100% real human hair, movable eyes, and a face design meant to evoke warmth and universal appeal, rather than unattainable beauty.

1987

KAGEMI
A Jointed Evolution of Omokage, Bringing User Fantasies Closer to Reality
Omokage gained significant public attention and wide user support- but one recurring request stood out: "I wish the doll had movable joints."Kagemi was Orient Industry’s response—
a fully updated model based on Omokage, but enhanced with internal joints in the arms and legs.
These joints allowed for dynamic posing and made it possible to recreate various positions to match the user’s preferences. The head could also rotate, adding expressiveness and versatility. Internally, the structure was refined for greater durability and elasticity, with a maximum weight tolerance of up to 120 kg (about 265 lbs).
Storage was also improved-arms, legs, and even the head could be detached.
The name Kagemi was inspired by the concept of a companion that’s always by your side-never leaving, never alone.

1992

EIKA
The Final and Finest Work of the “Kage Series”
Thanks to the success of Hohoemi, Omokage, and Kagemi, Orient Industry began gaining recognition in the industry. Media coverage increased, and orders surged—at one point, customers faced a waiting period of up to three and a half months. The overwhelming demand nearly pushed the company to its limits. To prevent further inconvenience to customers, Orient Industry temporarily halted all production and orders. The team then established a new factory three times the size of the original, built a proper organizational structure in 1990, and onboarded specialists in material development, production, and after-sales support.
With its new infrastructure in place, the company introduced Eika, the crowning jewel and final installment of the “Kage Series.”As the culmination of all prior innovations, Eika was re-engineered from the inside out. Everything—from the internal skeleton components to the finest design details—was meticulously upgraded.
Improvements included refined latex skin for stable quality and a more natural body silhouette, which often suffers when incorporating joints. To prevent breakage at limb joints, custom hardware was introduced. The maximum weight capacity was increased from 120 kg to 145 kg (approx. 320 lbs). With Eika, the iconic “Kage Series” concluded its legacy on a high note.

1997

Hana Sisters
Three Distinct Personalities, Heralding a New Era of Realism
Departing from the "Kage Series" aesthetic, Orient Industry launched the Hana Sisters-a trio named after bright and beautiful flowers, intended to introduce love dolls to a broader audience. Backed by years of craftsmanship, each sister came with her own unique personality.
The three dolls were named Ayaka (Colorful Flower), Yuka (Gentle Flower), and Mika (Beautiful Flower), each reflecting different aspects of femininity. The standout feature of this line was the introduction of interchangeable heads-a shared neck attachment allowed users to customize their doll by switching out facial designs. Individual head parts were also made available as optional add-ons, making the dolls even more versatile.
Each body could be disassembled into head, torso, arms, and legs. Legs came in two variations: extended and bent-knee, allowing for both standing and seated poses. These updates were driven by user feedback: “I want something that gets as close as possible to my ideal woman.”
The catalog tagline at launch captured the spirit perfectly: “A masterpiece to color the era of individuality.”For the first time, new sculptors joined the team, resulting in a dramatic leap in facial quality. The once mannequin-like look was replaced by naturalistic features and makeup, achieving a lifelike realism that set a new benchmark in the industry.

1998

CANDYGIRL
A Legendary Series is Born – Expressive, Diverse, and Beloved
Following the Hana Sisters, Orient Industry expanded the lineup with new head sculpts like Saki, Suzu, Haru, and Laura, bringing the total to eight head variations.Earlier dolls featured the “Wink Eye” mechanism - eyes that closed when laid down and opened when upright. But the new generation introduced Glastic Eyes - crystal-clear, glass-like eyes that added incredible realism.
Head connections were updated with magnetic ball joints, making them easier to swap. The neck could now tilt in multiple directions in addition to rotating, allowing for more nuanced, human-like expressions. Limb joints were also refined for improved durability and ease of handling.
Around this time, online sales began. Among the new heads, Suzu, with her cute and gentle expression, gained instant popularity and - along with the upcoming Alice - became one of Orient Industry’s signature designs.
To set their products apart from the commonly used term “Dutch wife,” the company invited users to help choose a new brand name. From the submissions, CandyGirl was selected as the official title. It was also during this period that a segment of users began differentiating “love dolls” (ラブドール) from the older, less refined “Dutch wife” terminology - a shift in language that would eventually redefine the entire industry.

1999

ASUKA
20th Anniversary Model – Debut of Full-Body Soft Vinyl
Up until this point, latex had been the primary skin material for dolls. However, it came with unavoidable downsides - it was prone to staining and required high maintenance. In response, Orient Industry began exploring alternatives, ultimately considering soft vinyl as a new material.
Based on a prototype body developed for this new material, the CandyGirl series introduced Asuka - a limited-edition model commemorating the company’s 20th anniversary.
Asuka featured articulated joints using custom metal fittings and "Wink Eye" movable eyes. The head and body were molded as a single unit using soft vinyl, which meant it was not compatible with other head parts.
Soft vinyl proved to be more stain-resistant, easier to clean, and cheaper to produce than latex. As a result, Asuka not only marked a turning point in material innovation but also opened the door for future models to adopt soft vinyl as the new standard -- ushering in the Soft Vinyl Era.

Petit Soft
The Birth of “Alice” – A Shift Toward Cute and Compact Dolls
Building on the manufacturing techniques used for Asuka, Orient Industry launched the Petit Soft series, introducing models like Alice and Mayu. This series broke away from the traditionally alluring, mature aesthetic and instead embraced compact bodies with adorable, youthful faces.
Among them, Alice quickly became a fan favorite and eventually a symbol of Orient Industry.
The dolls used ball-joint connections for the head, allowing for wide neck articulation and easy head replacement. Thanks to their full-body soft vinyl construction, they were lightweight, user-friendly, and affordably priced-greatly expanding their appeal to a broader customer base.
This period coincided with the rapid spread of the internet, marking a cultural shift. Media coverage of love dolls moved from print magazines to online platforms, where Alice gained even more visibility.
Her cuteness attracted a new demographic: younger people and collectors seeking emotional comfort or visual enjoyment, rather than purely physical use. As such, the Petit Soft line played a major role in expanding the love doll market beyond its traditional audience.
The series later expanded its lineup of head types and was renamed Petit Soft Pure in 2006. Today, it has evolved into the modern Love Doll Petit series.

2000

FANTASTIC
A Dream Come True for Anime Fans – The Rise of 2D-Inspired Dolls
With a growing fan base fueled by internet culture, Orient Industry launched FANTASTIC -- a sub-brand devoted entirely to anime-styled dolls. It was the brainchild of an in-house employee who was himself an anime enthusiast. The goal: to bring beautiful 2D anime girls into the 3D world as life-sized figures tailored specifically for anime fans.
The heads were removable and compatible with the Petit Soft series. Models like Tina and Tisse, dressed in classic maid outfits and featuring anime-style facial designs, were especially popular. For users who wanted to customize their dolls, unpainted versions were also offered.
FANTASTIC quickly gained recognition. Characters like Tisse became mascot figures in serialized magazine features (e.g., Penguin Club by Tatsumi Publishing). The brand also collaborated with AliceSoft to produce a doll based on the character Gakugazatsu from the game Daibanchou: Big Bang Age.
FANTASTIC dolls were frequently featured in figure magazines, public events, and TV programs, sparking widespread attention and solidifying their place as a pop culture phenomenon.

PETIT JEWEL
The first full-body silicone one-piece doll, a massive hit that sold out immediately!
Inspired by American-made silicone real dolls, Orient Industry spent two years developing its own full-body silicone love doll. The goal was to eliminate the issues found in American dolls, such as excessive weight, stickiness, and tearing. The result was a product that drastically improved both in appearance and functionality compared to earlier models. Its beautifully translucent skin, reminiscent of a jewel, led to the name "Jewel."Maximizing the advantages of silicone, the doll achieved a stunningly lifelike skin texture. The seamless one-piece body incorporated an internal skeleton, enabling realistic joint movement. This innovation marked a major turning point, making silicone the mainstream material for love dolls.Due to its unprecedented quality and material, it came with a high price and required weeks for delivery. Nonetheless, anticipation was high, and orders flooded in immediately upon release.Only 100 units were offered every three months, but each batch sold out instantly. Demand far exceeded supply. The silicone version of “Alice” was especially popular, even featuring in the brand’s first photo book, LOVER'S DNA (published by Saibunkan).Around this time, more users began enjoying love dolls not just as sexual partners, but as collectible figures for dress-up. In 2009, "Jewel" was renamed “Jewel 136.”

The photo book *"Lover's DNA"* featuring Petit Jewel Alice is released.

As with its predecessor, the doll included two leg styles—bent and straight—for different poses.Four head types were available: “Haruna,” “Moe,” “Tomoko,” and “Olivia.” “Olivia,” designed with a Scandinavian beauty in mind, attracted significant attention.Users could choose between silicone heads for a soft, realistic touch and soft vinyl for easier handling. With advantages like light weight, ease of use, low maintenance, affordability, and compact storage, the Exelent series was highly popular from a user-centric perspective.

JEWEL LIGHT
A hybrid of silicone and soft vinyl that meets user demands
The Jewel series stood out for its seamless, soft silicone body. However, some users struggled with storage or found the high cost prohibitive. In response, Orient Industry developed “Jewel Light,” which featured a silicone torso and detachable soft vinyl arms and legs. This reduced the cost and allowed the doll to be disassembled for easier storage.Combining the beauty and touch of silicone with affordability and practicality, Jewel Light became a popular, user-friendly alternative.
